Most Famous Tombs in Delhi

The glorious capital of India, New Delhi is more than just a popular travel destination in the country. Enriched with a spectacular historical legacy, the city is home to culture, traditions, and monuments which reflect its remarkable past. Among its many monuments are the historic tombs of Delhi which are amazing tourist attractions in the city.

List of tombs in Delhi

1. Lodhi Gardens

Arguably one of the most popular tourist spots in the city, Lodhi Gardens are home to the tombs of an entire era of the Pashtun Dynasty that once ruled Northern India. Tombs of famous personalities such as rulers of the Sayyid and Lodhi Dynasties are housed here.

Mohammed Shah’s is among the earliest ones built here and is markedly different than the others with its octagonal structure, overhanging stone eaves, and a central chamber. In comparison, Sikander Lodhi’s tomb is a double-domed but smaller structure.

2. Humayun’s Tomb

Commissioned by Hamida Banu Begum, Humayun’s eldest wife, in the year 1562, Humayun’s Tomb is renowned to be the first garden-tomb of India. The tomb was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyath, an extremely talented Persian architect.

The marvelous structure of the tomb was based on the grand scale of Humayun’s ancestor Timur’s tomb Gur-e-Amir, and it served as an incredible precedent for the coming Mughal architectural monuments. Declared as a UNESCO Heritage Site, the arches, courtyards, gateways, gardens and more of Humayun’s Tomb serve as a reminder of the decline of the Mughal Dynasty while the British Empire rose in the country.

3. Mirza Ghalib’s Tomb

The tomb of Mirza Ghalib, one of the greatest Urdu poets of all time, in Nizamuddin Basti is one of Delhi’s hidden gems.

An important historical as well as architectural site, the tomb has undergone restoration as well. Visited regularly by followers of the esteemed poet, the place is held in incredibly high regard and regarded almost as a sacred site.

The Dargah nearby adds to the serene ambiance of the tomb and its air of mysticism. The place is not just ideal for visitors who are fans of the poet, but others as well who are looking for peace and tranquility at this renowned site.

4. Khan-i-Khana Tomb

Khan-i-Khana Tomb
Located on Delhi’s Mathura road, the Khan-i-Khana Tomb was built by Mirza Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana in 1598 after his wife tragically passed away. During the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Mirza Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana was a renowned composer and also one of the chief nine ministers in the Emperor’s court. He was buried at this very tomb later on in the year 1627. With Red Sandstone being the chief material used to build this incredible structure, the sheen that the monument exhibits are matchless. The motif of the tomb is very similar to Humayun’s Tomb which falls in the vicinity. There is also an underground chamber at the Khan-i-Khana Tomb but it’s kept always locked.
